Critique of surveillance: private sector

The six main criticisms are that information processing practices:

discriminate among individuals in unfair ways;
result in a distribution of costs and benefits across society that is unjust;
create a chilling effect that leads to excessive conformity;
lack tranparency and accountability
fail to ensure free and informed consent to the collection and use of data;
contribute to governmental surveillance in ways that are inadequately regulated
